Bearlywild — Explore and Adventure, British Columbia and the Rockies

I'm Gus, based in Beautiful British Columbia in Metro Vancouver, and most weekends you'll find me on a trail, a lake, or a bike somewhere between here and the Rockies. I'm an avid outdoor person — it's hard for me to go a day without some kind of activity. Before moving to BC, I spent eight years living in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

I started rock climbing in 2004 and climbed avidly for 12 years. These days it's mostly cycling and hiking, but I still get out on the rock when I can.

I started Bearlywild because I kept googling "what's this trail actually like" before a trip and getting either a decade-old forum post or nothing at all — and because sharing the places I've been seemed like a good way to maybe get someone else out there too. So this is the site I wished existed: real trip reports — Garibaldi Lake, Joffre Lakes, Kananaskis, Lake Louise in both summer and the dead of winter, the Squamish-to-Whistler gravel climb nobody warns you about — with the actual conditions, gear, and mistakes included, built around real trip data (distance, elevation gain, duration, difficulty) logged on the route itself.

There's no comment section and no star ratings here. Every trip is based on my own notes and photos from being there, and I edit everything before it's published. If a gear review says I tested something, I tested it.

Trail conditions change fast — washouts, closures, reroutes — so if something in a report is out of date, or there's a trail I should check out, let me know: hello@bearlywild.ca. You can also follow along on Instagram.
